Research Council for Complementary Medicine (RCCM)
The RCCM was founded in 1983 by a group of enthusiastic practitioners
and researchers from both orthodox and complementary medicine. Today,
its main aim is to develop and extend the evidence base for
complementary medicine in order to provide practitioners and their
patients with information about the effectiveness of individual
therapies and the treatment of specific conditions. The RCCM considers
evidence from both quantitative and qualitative research. It is doing
this informally through its Complementary & Alternative Medicine
Research Network (CAMRN) as well as through information
provided on its web-site
www.rccm.org.uk. In June 2005, it will
provide access to detailed summaries, arising from a three year
research project funded by the Department of Health, reviewing the
complementary therapy literature in the NHS priority areas of cancer,
mental health, coronary heart disease and stroke, and chronic illness.
These summaries will also provide the basis for the National
Electronic Library's web-site on CAM that is being developed in
conjunction with the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital.
