What are manual therapies?
Manual therapies include a host of
techniques that focus primarily on the structures and systems of the body,
including the bones and joints, the soft tissues, and the circulatory and
lymphatic systems. Examples include chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation
and massage therapy.
What will be discussed at the conference?
The conference will cover the underlying
biology of manual therapies. Experts from the NIH and CIHR will join academic,
patient advocacy, and professional organizations to assess current knowledge and
identify opportunities for further research.
Key questions will be addressed during the
sessions and breakout groups.
Who should attend?
Researchers, health care practitioners,
patient advocates, and the public are all invited to participate.
What is the cost?
There is a registration fee of $35.
Visitor information
The National Institutes of Health, like all
Federal Government facilities, has instituted security measures to ensure the
safety of NIH employees, patients, and visitors. All visitors should be prepared
to show a photo ID upon request. Visitors may be required to pass through a
metal detector and have bags, backpacks or purses inspected or x-rayed as they
enter NIH buildings. Conference attendees may want to leave extra bags or
personal materials at their hotel to minimize the time needed for inspection.
A limited number of rooms are being held at
the Holiday Inn Select Bethesda at the government rate of $153/night. Please
make your reservation by May 15 to guarantee this rate and reference the "Manual
